All about binding 3 hours

We'll briefly overview why it is extremely important with regards to performance, scalability and even security but quickly move into topics such as: Do I always want to bind? (Surprisingly, the answer is no.) What is bind variable peeking? Is it good or evil in disguise or a bit of both? So the developers don't bindis cursor_sharing=force/similar appropriate system wide? (Emphasis will be on the reasons why setting cursor sharing at the instance level is not such a good idea.) What is the real difference between cursor_sharing=force/similar and which should we use under what circumstances? The presentation will be practical, with many examples and hard numbers you can use in your day-to-day work.

Reorganizing objects – when and how 1 hours

A hotly debated topic is “do I need to reorganize/rebuild indexes and tables”.  We will discuss the times when a reorganization or rebuild is relevant, how to measure what you’ve done (to verify that the work performed did something useful!), and the best techniques for performing a reorganization of data.

Top 10, no 11, new features of Oracle database 11g Release 2 – 1 hour

This session will focus on eleven new, high impact features of Oracle Database 11g and what they mean to you the developer or DBA. Continuing the format of the last five Oracle Open Worlds – Oracle’s AskTom will present these as a “top ten - no eleven” list – the eleven new features he believes will be the reason to implement on or upgrade to Oracle Database 11g Release 2. 

All about metadata; why telling the database about your schema matters – 1 hour

It is interesting to note how important metadata – data about data – is in the database.  One important piece of metadata is database constraints.  The database uses constraints for query optimization as well as data integrity.  Most people understand that constraints are a ‘data integrity feature’, but are not as aware of the fact that the optimizer relies heavily on metadata to operate at its best. We’ll explore the various types of metadata we as developers and DBA’s can assert into the database and the positive impact this metadata will have on us.
